A note from our Co-Founders at this time of transition

This is a pivotal time for Healing in Colour. We started this resource out of a deep love for our communities, but love alone can’t sustain us. Behind the scenes, there is an enormous amount of labour (as well as many other operating costs) involved in updating, maintaining, expanding, and improving our offerings. For over four years, we tried to meet these growing demands while keeping the directory free for the therapists listed, and it completely burned us out.

We’ve tried different avenues to find a way to compensate our team (made up entirely of BIPOC with multiple marginalized identities) and enhance our offerings while still keeping the directory free. We are endlessly grateful to the many community members that supported our efforts, including therapists who chose to donate when it wasn’t required. And, we found that these optional donations were not enough to make our work sustainable.

Now more than ever, our communities need radical spaces that support our healing and liberation. We’ve heard countless stories over the years about the importance of our directory for both therapists and folks looking to connect with them. The labour of finding a safer space while trying to heal is exhausting, and we have always worked to lessen that burden.

We firmly believe that what we offer is essential, but this community resource will not survive if we can’t find a way to make it sustainable. So, we made the difficult decision to move to a paid model. Our directories will always be free for the public to use, but we have introduced paid membership plans for the therapists listed on our directory.

Admittedly, this is a risk for us. We humbly hope that our communities find our work valuable enough to pay for it and keep the Healing in Colour directory alive. As always, our values have guided our transition, and we are offering sliding scale rates in line with our values of equity. We encourage anyone who values our work but finds our rates to be inaccessible to contact us.

Thank you for every share, click, donation, and word of affirmation you’ve given us. We’re grateful to be working for our shared healing and liberation alongside each of you.

In solidarity,

Lala & Yas
